National Hot Dog Month Day 15

Kool Kone was stop number 15 on the National Hot Dog Month Tour. I chose Kool Kone because it was a muggy, hot day and the whole gang was at the beach. I wanted to be back to the beach as fast as possible and Kool Kone was the closest place.

I have never had a hot dog at Kool Kone, so it was an eligible establishment!

Kool Kone is a classic summer shack/drive-in type of place. They serve up all kinds of ice cream, fried seafood, and, of course, hot dogs.

Drew isn't with me on weekends, so there won't be the usual pile 'o pictures on the Hot Dog Stories Facebook Page.

National Hot Dog Month Day 14

Dell's Kitchen was stop number 14 on the National Hot Dog Month Tour. Proprietor Della Sylvia and her daughter Kyla were working in the Dell's Kitchen trailer at Wareham High School on Saturday morning, July 14. Dell's is the food concession for the Wareham Junior Basketball program which takes place every Saturday morning.

Dell's Kitchen is a family affair. Daughter Kyla was helping out in the kitchen, Dell's husband was providing "moral support" and their ten year old was playing in the league. Dell coached in the league for many years and now she's happy to be providing fuel to players and fans alike.

This is still a part time gig for Dell, she works construction full time and hopes to retire to the hot dog business full time in a few years.

Drew isn't with me on weekends, so there won't be the usual pile 'o pictures on the Hot Dog Stories Facebook Page. That's too bad- cuz there was lots to see today and the food needed that high def lens of Drew's.

Still getting caught up on videos, but the full story is over on Hot Dog Stories.

A Hot Dog a Day Number 23: Wareham Gatemen Game at Spillane Field in Wareham, MA

For July 23rd's hot dog, I waited until dinner time. The 23rd day of my mission to eat a hot dog a day in honor of National Hot Dog Month was a hot one- best spent at the beach. That's just what I did too. The evening brought other diversions, like a Cape Cod Baseball League game at Spillane Field in Wareham, Massachusetts. Wareham is the home of the Gatemen; they were playing the Harwich Mariners. I was looking for a hot dog.

This dog looked pretty hot- it was around 90 degrees at game time!

I  had a few words with Terry Thompson, pitching coach of the Gatemen.

We had a brief chat while the Gatemen players groomed the field. No prima donnas in this league!

The concession stand menu has everything you'd expect at a baseball game: candy, chips, nachos, meatball subs and HOT DOGS!

The gals in the concession stand were having fun- I think they thought this was a Hollywood movie.

They serve Kayems at Spillane Field- you can get a "regular" or "jumbo." I got the jumbo: a quarter pounder! They serve it to you plain and you dress it up yourself.

I dressed mine all around and...

CHOWED DOWN!

HAPPY NATIONAL HOT DOG MONTH!

A Hot Dog a Day Number Two: Frankenstein's in Wareham, MA

For my second installment of eating a hot dog a day in July, Mrs. HDM, Little Miss, and I stopped in at Frankenstein's at 208R Main Street in Wareham, MA. It's a funky little joint that opened up last September.

When you step inside, you can sense the theme of the place.

As if this guy out front couldn't clue you in to the little joke (get it? FRANKenstein's?)

Also inside this day was the lovely and talented Melissa. If you have two functional eyes, you can see the "lovely," her talent (besides slinging hot dogs) is singing! She's the lead singer of Shattered, a rocking band that plays out around Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod.

Melissa cheerfully explained the extensive menu at Frankenstein's- they have something for everyone!

There are weekly and daily specials too.

Frankenstein's serves up a Kayem Old Tyme Frank on the classic New England split top roll. As with most cool little hot dog joints, it's the toppings that make it special. The specialty of the house is the award winning Wareham Fire Department Chili Dog, known as "The Charlie Dog." The guys at the firehouse in Wareham like to fire things up in the kitchen too, and they are the reigning champions of the Annual Fire Fighter's Chili Challenge, an event held every year to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Frankenstein's uses the championship recipe. Of course Mrs. HDM and myself HAD to order the chili dogs.

Little Miss had a "half mustard, half plain" dog. No ketchup for Little Miss, her parents are raising her right!

Time to CHOW DOWN.

I think she likes it!

True to form, the good humored and very gorgeous Mrs. HDM wanted no part of having a picture of her eating on the internet!

I aint so shy, so I CHOWED DOWN- boy was it yummy!

I could taste why the guys from Wareham Fire are the Chili Champs, the chili had a subtle spiciness with a kicking back end bite. Damn fine chili dogs!
