Wild About Harry

There are people all over the internet who would be delighted to share their methods for making money, usually for a price. Harry Schechter's new blog on Micro-ISVs and start-ups is a freebie. He basically tells you how he started his own ISV (an independent software vendor with just one software developer) and how he brings his product to market.

Now I'm not an overly technical person-hot dogs are a decidedly low tech business- but I found his blog very informative. There are many "nuts and bolts" articles on how to succeed as an ISV, there are also good articles on general business practices that would help any online entrepreneur.

His brief article Bootstrapping for Early Sales: Imitate then Innovate could apply to any online business-he even quotes T.S. Eliot!

A more in depth article titled Profit in 90 Days: Crucial Accounting Information for Start-ups gives solid advice on what new business owners need to think about when setting up their books. HIRE AN ACCOUNTANT is one bit of advice Harry gives. He is so right. A good accountant is worth about 10 times what you pay them. Getting off to a good start with the bookkeeping is tantamount to success in any business.

If you're a person who wants to succeed selling software or if you want some solid, common sense advice on business building, you should give Harry Schechter's new blog on Micro-ISVs and start-ups a read. You'll be glad you did.

Week 4 of the NFL

Another Winning Week

Winning Football Picks went 5-1-1 for a 6.4 unit profit on the day this past Sunday! If you like money, you should be taking a look at my free football picks site. I watch NFL Football every week and I have been known to make the occaisional "investment" in games I really like. I have created a whole site devoted to my "investment strategies" called Winning Football Picks.

FOOTBALL!!!!

My Patriots looked scary good last Sunday. They rolled over the Jets and made it look easy. Tom Brady, Wes Welker, Dante Stalworth and Randy Moss are going to be fun to watch this season. I don't see them having a tough time until they face Indy and they might smoke them too! The Pats are going to beat San Diego by a couple of touchdowns (or more) Sunday. Too bad Jared is flying all the way in to watch his team get croaked!

Football season also provides the opportunity to line my pockets with the profits from "educated sporting investments." I have always done well wagering on football and I hope this season is no exception. I have, as you may know, started a new site with LAZ called Winning Football Picks where we'll share our picks, predictions and "investment strategies" all season long. Week One's games (Thursday, Sunday & Monday Night) saw a record of 8 wins, 3 losses and 2 pushes for a total of plus 4.6 "units" (thats $4600 for a "dime player"). Not a bad start to the season, eh?

Livin' in the Two

Will you live in the two? The top two percent of income earners that is. Well, will you? If you want to find out about how self improvement can help you be one of those top two percent of income, then go to Live In the Two dot com and take their test. I did.

I found out what I already know because I am a highly enlightened Hotdogman. I am disciplined, I have a passion for my work, I don't fear risk, I am an eternal optimist (I like to think of myself as a pragmatic optimist), and I have good interpersonal skills. I already knew this about myself, but it's nice to reaffirm things for yourself sometimes. Having these traits doesn't guarantee you'll be amongst the top two percent of income earners, but if you think this way it is more likely you will be.

I guess folks who focus on self improvement will always be striving to be better at what they do. Most people who are good at what they do are well paid and the more well paid you are, the more likely you'll be a big earner, perhaps you'll even "live in the two!"

I have applied these principles to my hot dog truck, as I have in my former sales career. While the hot dog truck isn't as lucrative as some of my past endeavors, I am passionate about my dogs and I make the best damn dogs in my area. That has earned me a steady regular clientele and has in turn increased my business (and my income)!

CASH MONEY CONTEST!

Everyone is always looking for a way to make money online. One way to make money online is to win MY CONTEST!

I have a Tip Bucket at the Hot Dog Truck. Written on the bucket are the words "Hot Dog Truck Operator's Relief Fund." Customers drop a lot of change into the bucket to show their appreciation for eating the best hot dogs. I take the bills out every day but I let the change build up until it gets almost full, then I pop over to a Coinstar Machine and cash it in for folding money.

So I am going to have a contest related to this bucket. The PRIZE FOR THIS CONTEST will be ONE HALF of what is contained in the "Hot Dog Truck Operator's Relief Fund" as of May 31, 2007! You will need to guess the total amount of cash in the bucket without going over. Who ever is closest to the total amount without going over (can you tell I've watched the Price is Right) will win the cash! (I will actually send a money order but "cash" sounds so much better...) The "Fund" is pictured below. Hopefully the other objects in the picture will give you an idea of the size of the container. FYI it holds 5 pounds of Tuna Salad.

Make Money Online

There are a host of "make money with your Blog" sites out there. Sifting through them all, I have realized that some are junk, some are excellent and many are repetitive.

Before you go spending money on some e-book or manual that tells you how to make money with your blog (like the sites, there are good ones and bad ones-certainly check out their claims), you should look at the quality, FREE information that is available to you. There is also a great way to drive exponential traffic to your site. If you're using Blog Explosion or Blog Mad, this seems to be a good complementary way to get more "eyeballs" to your site. I'm trying it with one of my other sites. They explain it better than I could, so click HERE to learn more.

Credit Cards Can Make You Rich!

I had a friend who called 0% interest cash advance credit cards "the last great pyramid scam in America." He'd use the cards to get a cash advance, put the cash advance in the bank or in bonds and take out another card to pay that card off. This guy must've had 20 or 30 cards working at one time! John Chow told a similar tale on his blog about how he did a similar scheme. What a country!

There was also the guy (I forget his name) who scammed the airlines out of millions of miles with his credit card. He'd go to AAA and charge tens of thousands of dollars in traveler's checks on his creit card (there is no surcharge on traveler's checks at AAA) which would earn him airline miles. When the bill came in, he'd cash the traveler's checks and pay up. He never paid interest because he paid in full every month and he accrued enough airline miles to travel the world for free with his wife and kids! His scam was so successful, the airlines closed the loophole he exploited.

These guys made credit cards work to their advantage. They obviously had discipline. Too many people get into trouble with their credit cards by spending more than they can afford. This screws up your credit rating. When I was in the mortgage business, we dealt with people with credit problems all the time. The challenge was to help folks with poor credit repair their credit so they could qualify for a home loan. There are many tricks and secrets to credit repair and many of them work, some better than others. There are also a lot of scammers in the credit repair business, so be careful when reviewing these programs.

The best thing to do is not need credit repair services, tricks or secrets at all. Pay your bills, stay within a budget and don't max out the plastic. With good credit you can qualifiy for 0% cash advance cards like my friend and actually make money off the credit card companies. Unfortunately, credit card companies send these offers out knowing 999 out of a thousand people won't be so clever and will end up paying them interest.
