Top 20 College Campus Food Trucks

Veggyhead just graduated high school last week. Now all she has to do is work at J.P.Licks all summer and wait for the fall to roll around-she'll be attending Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Did I mention she's PRE-MED! A father couldn't be more proud.

She had been considering the Sargent School at Boston University. I was hoping she would go there to be closer to home, but she knows what she's doing. The cool thing about BU would have been her proximity to the Campus Trolley, a funky food cart we visited for Hot Dog Stories last fall.

Veggyhead felt Case Western was a better school for the major she wants: Nutritional Microbiology, so my dreams of visiting her at school every once in a while for a lunch date were quashed.

The good news is she might find her own College Food Truck at Case Western. I stumbled on a list of 20 College Food Trucks and, even though there isn't one listed at her school, she may yet find quality street food on her campus. Or, she could start her own....

Fenway Flashback Remote

With Roger Clemens most likely riding off into the sunset for the final time, I found myself reflecting on the night he struck out 20 (for the first time). I wasn't at the game, I was off at UMASS pretending to be a student.

I took a class called "Seminar in Critical Legal Theory" that involved a lot of class participation. I was always prepared for this class and vigorously argued with the professor on just about any topic. Since it was at 9 AM, I made sure I was alert and lucid as class participation was half the grade. I had the class on Wednesday April 30, the day after Clemens struck out 20.

We'd been watching the game at our apartment and as the game wore on, there was more and more excitement (and people-we had the nicest TV in our section of the complex so drop-ins were numerous that night). This was college, so there was beer and lots of it. The crowd hung on every pitch as Clemens neared this baseball milestone. After the game was over, we had a celebration and, of course, more beer. Lots of it.

Needless to say, no homework or reading got completed that night and I was uncharacteristically unprepared for my "Seminar in Critical Legal Theory" class.

I slinked into the classroom and grabbed a seat in the rear. The prof began his usual pre-discussion lecture and then segued into Q&A and discussion. That morning the class as a whole just wasn't into it. The prof began randomly calling on students for reaction and he eventually made his way to me. He asked me a question and expected me to comment, after all, I always had something to say. Alas, I had not done the reading because I'd been engrossed in the ballgame (and the beer).

I had to think quick. I spoke and said, "Well professor, I'm not sure about your question, but I can tell you Roger Clemens broke Tom Seaver's Major League strikeout record last night by striking out 20." The class broke out in laughter, even the prof chuckled, "yes, I heard about that."

He left me alone for the rest of the class and the next time we met, I was back to my usual, prepared self.

Money for College

With a child in high school, I need to start thinking about paying for college. My kids have a pretty good chunk of change stashed away for college thanks to the stock market boom of the 1990's. I shouldn't have to worry about need ing to pay too much out of pocket for college and the kids won't be buried in student loans when they graduate.

I can't imagine any of my kids will be heavily recruited for athletic scholarships, a couple may have a shot at academic scholarships though. There are a lot of other scholarships available out there for all sorts of things. It will just be up to me and the kids to find scholarships that they are eligible for.

The internet is, of course, making it easier to find scholarships. A site I peeked at called Scholarships.com is a must for any college bound kid and their parents. It is essentially a large database/list of available scholarships with all the eligibility criteria, contact and application info for each scholarship. It is the single best resource out there for people who want to find scholarships.
