Down Under

I have been to Australia. My wife has a whole bunch of cousins down there in Freemantle and Perth. What a gorgeous part of the world! One of my wife's cousins has a 42 foot catamaran and they took us out sailing for a few days. We saw dolphins, whales, octopii, skates, sharks, penguins and sea lions. We even did some fishing for "breakfast herring."

We really want to go back and explore other parts of the country. Much of Australia is still very unspoiled and "wide open." I imagine it is a lot like the USA was at the turn of th 20th century.

One of her cousins now lives in Sydney so we've promised to go visit there. We might not need a hotel in Sydney for our whole stay, but I hate to impose for too long on friends and family. He's an aspiring Aussie Rules Football Player, so we may get to go see some games while we're there. Sydney is far more metropolitan and populated than Freemantle, so it will probably be a more urbane visit.

My wife's always wanted to go to Brisbane, since she was born there. I don't know much about the city or the area, but the opportunities for coastal recreating, bushwhacking and urban exploration are abundant. We don't know anyone in that part of the country, so we'll need a hotel in Brisbane.

Melbourne is way down south, so you could go skiing there in the (northern hemisphere's) summer time. I'd prefer to visit in the winter (their summer) and travel the great Ocean Road while exploring the miles of deserted coastline. There's lots of good wineries in this part of Australia too. We'll definitely need a hotel in Melbourne, especially in wine country!

When we visited Freemantle, we spent nearly 3 weeks exploring the region, I'd like to spend a year in Australia on "walkabout" (OK, maybe "driveabout") the next time we go.

It helps to remember the things that last.

Ecclesiastes 9:11

I again saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift and the battle is not to the warriors, and neither is bread to the wise nor wealth to the discerning nor favor to men of ability; for time and chance overtake them all.

Jeff is in the Money

Frequent visitors know about Jeff from Horizon Technology. He eats at my truck four days a week as a rule. I never see him on Fridays-he must hit the salad bar on Fridays. Jeff always tries to be an amateur maitre'd for patrons who arrive while he questions me about the various uses for duct tape in home repairs.

A guy at the "home office" in Lake Forest has been making goofy pics of Jeff on dollar bills. FYI, home office guy, THIS is how it's done!

Eastern Box Turtle

There is abundant wildlife all around us. At my parents' home we have observed these turtles for years, oftentimes on the driveway in the early morning after a rainy night.

We were sitting on the back porch Saturday and noticed something moving (slowly) across the lawn. The kids and I went to investigate and I snapped a few pictures of this Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina). These turtles are protected in Massachusetts from collection in the wild and you are not allowed to keep them as pets. How this could ever be enforced, I don't know; the turtle police are way underfunded in my community!

Regardless, we observed him (her?) for a while and then moved him to the underbrush in the "out of bounds area" for our dog. Dogs can do a real number on turtles.

Enjoy the pictures of this turtle you might not get to see in your backyard!

Even at the height of summer, thoughts of the coming autumn's business crowd my mind. I am always planning something. I am thankful I have the help from my family, particularly the children I so endlessly plan for.

Proverbs 10:5

He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely,But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully.

Be Careful What you wish for!

OK so I have been complaining about gas prices for almost two years now. The reason: my 1999 Chevy Suburban. The thing gets about 12-15 MPG around town and not much better on the highway. At three bucks a gallon, even a ride to the Cape can turn into an expensive affair.

Now I like the car, it fits all my kids, the dog, our gear and the equipment bags for my baseball team. It starts every day and it GOES when you tap the gas pedal. My mechanic says I can drive the thing to a half a million miles or more! I just feel it wasn't treating me well wallet-wise as I am usually alone in the car 90% of the time.

So my brother gets a new car and he says I can have his old Ford Escort. Not exactly the coolest ride around, but it gets almost 30 MPG and the Air Conditioner works great. I took the Suburban off the road and I have been driving the Escort for a week now. I have only spent $20 on gas the whole week-and I drove to the Cape and back in addition to the regular running around. I spent $20 every other day with the Suburban!

The problem is is the thing won't GO! I tap the gas and its as if the car says "OK, hold on a sec, we'll get there." It can barely get out of its own way! Plus I get no "road respect." In the Suburban, if I wanted to take a left against oncoming traffic, I'd just nose out and people would let me go. Size DOES matter when negotiating traffic. I nose out to take a left with the Escort and people flip me the bird, honk or just zip by with a contemptuous look. Maybe after a few months with the Escort, I'll switch back to the Suburban. For now, I'll put up with its shortcomings and keep an extra $50-$80 a week in my pocket.
