An Interview With the Hotdogman

Back in January, I attended Affiliate Summit West. I had a blast cruising the conference floor asking folks "The Question." One of my victims was Bryan Knowlton from YourBossBlows.com. He answered correctly! In fact he liked what I was doing so much, he decided to interview me.

Bryan is a bit of a procrastinator, so he just posted the video today. Check it out for some insight into the life and times of The Hotdogman.

Fei Fan Hot Dog Story

I am off to Boston today. Drew Bennet, from the Benspark Blog and I are heading into Chinatown to Fei Fan Eatery- a Japanese style hot dog joint that opened up a couple of months ago.

Watch for photos and a Hot Dog Story about our trip in a couple of days!

Local Internet Savvy Plumber Answers "The Question"

I interviewed Mr. Andy Rodenhiser, owner of Rodenhiser Plumbing today. His company made some waves around here last summer with this billboard:

Needless to say, the many billboards in the greater Boston area piqued people's interest and riled a few of the more Puritanical types around here. The URL linked to a portion of Andy's website on air conditioning repair.

I sat down with Andy to chat about local marketing from a business person's point of view- as opposed to the internet marketer's point of view folks so often read about. That interview, along with a few others, will be the focus of a story about local internet marketing over on RobMerlino.com in the near future.

As regular readers may know, whenever I do an interview, I ask "The Question."

So, true to form, I asked Andy: "Do you put ketchup on your hot dogs?"

His answer: "Ketchup ...boring... Chile, onions and real cheese, now you have my attention!
And bacon!!!!!"

I know mama Rodenhiser raised her boys right! Now if she could only get Andy's brother to show up for appointments!!!

Eat West

The Hotdogman is branching out! In the next week or two, I will begin authoring a new food blog on Wicked Local Framingham called Eat West. The blog will be hosted by the Wicked Local folks and feature photos, videos, and reviews of restaurants in the Metrowest Boston area (with the occasional jaunt into Boston).

I won't be critiquing hot dog joints on this blog- it will be mostly reviews of sit down establishments with a fast food type place thrown in here and there. We are setting the blog up this week and I am actually making my first visit to an old local favorite a bit later today.

Once the site is up and populated, I will link it here. You'll also be able to find it on Rob's Hot Dog Tales.

As always, stay tuned!

Chilly Dogs

No, I'm not talking about these:

I'm talking about what you'll get today in the Boston area. Out door vendors will be in for a bit of a chill today. Make sure the pipes don't freeze in those steam tables and wear an extra pair of socks. Look what I woke up to this morning:

I knew I should have left the snow shovels out for another few weeks. Mother Murphy does it again.

Two Hot Dog Stories this week

With the advent of Spring, the Hotdogman begins venturing out to explore new and exciting places to munch on that most ubiquitous of encased meats: the hot dog. I have two trips scheduled this week.

On Thursday, I will be heading into Boston's Chinatown to check out a Bostonian version of Vancouver's Japadog, which just opened an east coast location in New York City. Fei Fan Eatery is not affiliated with Japadog, but the style of hot dog and spirit of the place is the same. Joining me will be Drew Bennet from the Benspark Blog. Drew likes his hot dogs and will be accompanying me on the National Hot Dog Month Tour 2012 as co-host and camera man. He'll be coming on some of the Springtime jaunts as well.

Friday night features the return of the lovely and talented, processed cheese hating Mrs. HDM as we have a date night planned in beautiful Somerville, MA at Trina's Starlight Lounge. Trina's features gourmet style "haute dogs" on the menu every Friday. Boston Food Bloggers are invited to join us and CHOW DOWN on some dogs whilst quaffing their favorite libations from Trina's bar. Hope to see some fellow foodies from any food genre at the bar!

Hot Dog Stories: the Month Ahead

With Spring upon us, The Hotdogman will be venturing out much more to a variety of hot dog joints and other hot dog venues. Highlights of upcoming visits include the first appearance of Mrs. HDM in a Hot Dog Story for 2012 as we venture to Trina's Starlight Lounge next Friday, March 30. Each Friday, Trina's serves up a gourmet "Haute Dog" to kick off the weekend.

Of course the annual jaunt to Florida is coming up as well. We plan on visiting Mad Dogs new location in Venice, FLA. We went to their first location last year. We are glad to hear their business is successful and growing! Whilst in Florida, I am also planning on popping in on Dream Maker Hot Dog Carts- a hot dog cart manufacturer in St. Petersburg.

We are also planning on being there for the Larry Joe's New England Fire Pit grand reopening. Larry had a bit of a problem last fall- an electrical problem burned his trailer to a crisp!

Larry assures his rabid fans that he'll be out slinging dogs again in a few weeks. His trailer is almost ready for delivery.

There are plenty of other surprises in store in the coming weeks as we ramp up for the National Hot Dog Month 2012 Tour. You may nominate a Hot Dog Joint for inclusion on the tour HERE.

Shark Tank Entrepreneur Stephan Aarstol answers "The Question"

I spoke to another Shark Tank entrepreneur the other day. Stephan Aarstol of Tower Paddle Boards, a west coast Internet entrepreneur who was funded by Mark Cuban, chatted with me about life after the Shark Tank and the current state of his business.

You can read my interview with Stephan on The Shark Tank Blog.

As usual, in addition to talking about the show, I asked Stephan "The Question:" Do you put ketchup on your hot dogs?

Unfortunately, Stephan's west coast roots influenced his answer. "Yes I do," was his answer.

I bet he'd change his tune if the Sharks used ketchup on entrepreneurs!

New Jersey Hot Dog Tour

I eat a hot dog a day in July to celebrate National Hot Dog Month, but there's a guy who does a New Jersey Hot Dog Tour in the fall. The 9th Annual tour is scheduled for Sat Sept 22nd , 2012. There are two motor coaches that take riders to seven stops. A preliminary set of stops for this fall's tour is Hot Dog Johnnys, Charlies Pool Room, Frankly My Dear, and Tobys Cup.

I hope to interview tour organizer John Fox at some point this week, and the Hotdogman will be hitting this tour for sure!

Profender Inventor Tony Devine answers "The Question"

I recently interviewed Tony Devine, inventor of the Profender, a basketball training tool recently showcased on The Shark Tank. You can read the interview over at The Shark Tank Blog.

Tony is a Special Education Teacher, Basketball Coach, and inventor.

He also likes Hot Dogs.

I asked him The Question, "Do you put Ketchup on your hot dogs?" his answer:

"ABSOLUTELY NOT! I put spicy mustard and sometimes onions, when they are available, on my hot dogs. And I don't put Mayo on Hoagies either!"
Spoken like a true Philadelphian.

Tony asked me to look him up when I am in Philly and he promised to take me to some righteous hot dog joints.

Smart Bakers Daniel and Stephanie Rensing answer "The Question"

I spoke to Daniel  Rensing yesterday. Dan and his childhood sweetheart and wife Stephanie are co-founders of The Smart Baker. Their business was recently featured on The Shark Tank and I called Dan up to interview him for the Shark Tank Blog.

After we had finished talking about their appearance on the show, I asked Dan "The Question."

He was also authorized to answer for his wife, Stephanie.

As much as I enjoyed their appearance on The Shark Tank, and as happy as I am for both of them for their success, I am sorry to say they have brought the "childhood" part of the "childhood sweethearts" equation into adulthood. Despite their youthful appearance, Dan and Stephanie are well over age 18.

And they BOTH put Ketchup on their hot dogs! Stephanie actually confesses to having hot dogs with her ketchup- UGH! Dan tried to blame his mom for his current affliction, but I wasn't buying it.

While I am happy for their post-Shark Tank success, I think they need to have another look at the Rules.

Hotdogman vs. Hamburgerman

Casey's Diner is near and dear to my heart. It's located in my hometown of Natick, Ma, and I had my first hot dog there in 1969 when I was four years old. The Casey family has been selling hot dogs in this town since 1890, which makes them the oldest, continuously run, hot dog business in the world! Casey's is housed in a lovingly preserved Worcester Lunch Car, which the family purchased in 1922.

Here's fourth generation proprietor Pat Casey, hard at work during the lunch hour.

Pat took himself away from the dogs for a minute to help me do a little commercial for the upcoming National Hot Dog Month Tour.

While hot dogs are normally the fare for me at Casey's, there are plenty of other things on the menu too- including some of the best hamburgers on the planet.

I decided Casey's burgers needed some Hot Dog Truck love, but I thought burgers were a bit out of my realm, so I brought in an expert. I reached out to Burger blogger and chef Richard Chudy. He runs the Boston Burger Blog. 2-3 times a month, Richard ventures out to burger joints, orders up, snaps some photos and reviews burgers in the city. Richard enjoys burgers from the simplest "greasy spoon" variety all the way up to expensive, gourmet style burgers. When he's not munching on burgers, he runs the Skinny Beet with girlfriend Katie Barszcz from A Small Boston Kitchen. Together they do catering, give cooking lessons, and work as private chefs. Food is their life. Richard and I snapped a photo in front of Casey's before jumping into the belly of the beast.

Also along for the ride today was Drew Bennet from the Benspark blog. Drew is a mommy blogger supreme, lover of fine foods, and he's going to be riding shotgun with me on the National Hot Dog Month Tour this summer. He even managed to score us a bunch of new camera equipment from Kodak for the tour.

After exchanging pleasantries, we ordered up some of Casey's famous cheeseburgers. We each got a bacon cheeseburger with onions grilled in.

While the burgers were cooking, Drew Chowed Down on a Hot Dog. Hey Drew- don't eat the plate!

I Chowed Down on a hot dog too. I usually get one as an appetizer when I have a burger at Casey's.

Before long, the burgers were done. Richard took a bunch of close up pictures of his before eating it. He has very nice burger photos on his blog.

Richard Chowed Down on his burger like a true pro. Note the  forward hunch while Chowing Down; he definitely gets some style points there!

I of course chowed down too. Drew ate his so fast, I didn't get a picture!

Judging by the smile on Richard's face, I'd say he enjoyed his burger!

We both gave Casey's burgers TWO THUMBS UP!

Drew wanted a picture for his site. He even did a post and video on the visit to Casey's too.

For the rest of the story of the Hotdogman meeting the Hamburgerman and to get Richard's take on Casey's burgers, Check out Hot Dog Stories.

Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and a NEW SPONSOR for National Hot Dog Month

I had a great time on a beautiful day at Casey's Diner in Natick with Richard Chudy, of Boston Burger Blog fame and Drew Bennet from the Benspark blog. We munched on some yummy burgers and dogs, but that story will have to wait until tomorrow.

Drew will be riding shotgun with me on The National Hot Dog Month 2012 Tour this July. Since he's a member of the team, he's been actively seeking sponsors and he scored a good one! Kodak has donated a bunch of camera equipment for the tour. This year will feature better production values and much better sound, thanks in large part to Kodak!

If you would like to sponsor the event, contact me at hotdogman@thehotdogtruck.com or help fund the tour here.

Hamburger Stories and Lip Balm

Today is the day I meet up with The Hamburgerman and Drew from the Benspark blog at Casey's Diner. I will have photos and video of the event up tomorrow.

While a hot dog will be on the agenda as an appetizer, Casey's juicy hamburgers are the order of the day. Richard, The Hamburgerman, reviews burger joints all over the Boston area from the greasy spoon all the way up to the priciest gourmet burgers. I am interested to see where Casey's falls on his rating scale.

Since I will be spending most of the day on this outing, I am including a video I made for The Shark Tank Blog yesterday about Kisstixx, the chemically reacting, dual flavored lip balm that was recently funded on The Shark tank TV show. Their products are made in the USA and they are sure to add some flavor to your love life. The Hotdogman even manages a plug!

Enjoy.

Burgers for The Hotdogman

I am stoked. Spring is in the air in force after a very mild winter. That means The Hotdogman is going to be "out there" visiting hot dog joints in earnest (as soon as I am cleared to drive- still recovering from surgery). I will have many surprises this season to lead up to the National Hot Dog Month Tour this July.

Since my mobility is still limited, I am starting the new season close to home and heading out to Casey's Diner.

Tomorrow, I will be joined by Drew from the Benspark Blog and Richard, The Hamburgerman from the Boston Burger Blog. This Power Trio will chow down on some Casey's Burgers (always voted near the top for having the BEST BURGERS in Metrowest). I am sure I will have an "appetizer" or two as well.

I always enjoy meeting other food bloggers, so does Drew. We all like good food too.

It should be fun, so stay tuned....

Show No Shelly Ehler Answers "The Question"

Regular readers may know I also write for the Shark Tank Blog, which I co-produce with my buddy Kirk Taylor. One of the things I get to do for that site is interview entrepreneurs that have appeared on the show.

I ask them questions about their experiences in the Shark Tank, but I also ask them "The Question."

I recently spoke to Shelly Ehler, one of the most popular entrepreneurs to appear on the show to date. Her product was funded ON THE SPOT by my favorite Shark, Lori Greiner. Shelly invented the Show No, a towel that allows kids to change in and out of bathing suits (or anything else for that matter) in a "modest" fashion. It's a great product- in fact she's sending one along for Little Miss' swim bag.

Shelly was a delight to talk to- she's well grounded, inspirational, and full of purpose.

When I asked her "Do you put ketchup on your hot dogs," her answer was:

"NO! I use mustard, I never put ketchup on my hot dogs."

It was a very emphatic "NO!" Shelly's folks brought her up right.

So there you have it folks. The REAL secret to success on The Shark Tank.....

Two Sure Signs of Spring

We had a pretty mild winter here in Massachusetts, and you'll get no complaints from me about that. Even so, the Spring time is always exciting for me. It's when things warm up and green up, baseball season starts, and lots of other fun, outdoor activities get under way.

One of the first signs of Spring around my yard is the appearance of the crocus, that delicate, little flower that is the first to foist its blooms in the garden each season. When I see these, I know winter has come to an end. It just fill me with joy.

The next sign of spring can't be found in my yard, but it's ubiquity in the urban and suburban landscape all over this nation is a sign that winter's blanket of cold and gloom is about to be lifted.

I am talking, of course, about the hot dog cart!

Sure, there are hardy vendors that, like evergreens, never go away for the winter, but they are few and far between. Before long, hot dog carts will be in nearly every community, serving up their wares for another season of hungry customers looking for a quick, inexpensive and delicious meal.

Spring never looked so delicious!

Hotdogman meets Hamburgerman

As you surely must know if you are reading this, I am the Hotdogman. One of the privileges that comes with that title is I get to go eat hot dogs at various establishments and write about it- or shoot video. It's a fun job.

There's a guy here in the Boston area who has a similar gig, the only difference is, he blogs about another All American delicacy: the Hamburger. Richard from The Boston Burger Blog is someone I have been following for a while, and I decided to reach out to him and invite him out to one of my favorite spots for a hamburger, Casey's Diner.

Yes, Casey's. While Casey's is renowned for its hot dogs, they make a damn fine hamburger too. They are consistently ranked in the top burger joints in the area, and with good reason; the burgers are out of bounds delish. Richard has never been to Casey's, so next Wednesday, March 14, we are going to check out some Casey's burgers together. Drew from the Benspark blog will be tagging along. He's practicing for the National Hot Dog Month 2012 tour, he's going to be my side kick and camera man.

It is sure to be a fun and delicious visit.

Stay tuned....

Shark Tank Entrepreneur answers "The Question"

As regular readers may know, I have been working with my buddy Kirk Taylor on The Shark Tank Blog for the last month or so. The site has become wildly popular and has kept me pretty busy. One of the things I do is contact entrepreneurs who have been on the show and follow up with them about "life after The Shark Tank."

I most recently spoke to a guy named Donny McCall, inventor of The Invis-a-rack, a retractable pick up truck rack. Donny didn't get funded, mainly because he was unwilling to source manufacturing to China; he makes his product in the USA and wants to keep it that way. You can read about Donny HERE.

I asked Donny "The Question." Do you put ketchup on your hot dogs?

Now I like Donny, I really do. His stance on manufacturing in the USA is admirable. This country needs more entrepreneurs like him: committed to creating jobs, building community, and making things right here in the USA. I LOVE THAT!

BUT.......

...when I asked him "The Question," Donny said he puts ketchup on his hot dogs "sometimes."

I was disappointed, I explained The Rules to him, and I voiced my standard displeasure when people answer "The Question" in the affirmative.

The only solace I can take from this exchange is Donny uses ketchup that is made in the USA.

Hot Dog Lady

I got this email the other day:

Rob-

We're reaching out to you because we're releasing our latest comedy video - a musical ode to that most Los Angeles figure of the L.A. nightlife : the HOT DOG LADY. She feeds us when we're famished, helps hold off that hangover, and throws in chips and a drink for only a dollar fifty extra. It's high time she got some love.

We're fans of the blog, and we'd love for you to post the video as a news blurb or feature, if it works for your content. Let us know if you're interested in posting it!

So yesterday, the boys sent me a link to the video along with their press release, the text of which follows. Enjoy.

We're Still Friends, an LA comedy team, have released their latest video "HOT DOG LADY." The group, whose videos have been featured on Funny Or Die, has written a musical ode to one the lovely ladies of the LA nightlife scene, the Hot Dog Lady. Starring group members Christopher Mena, Tony Vitali, and Jonathan
Howard and directed by Christopher Abbey, the HOT DOG LADY video is destined to become the anthem for hard-working hot dog ladies everywhere.

"HOT DOG LADY" was written for that most ‘Los Angeles’ figure of the L.A. nightlife: the HOT DOG LADY. She feeds us when we're famished, helps hold off that hangover, and throws in chips and a drink for only a dollar fifty extra. It's high time she got some love. The video was shot entirely in downtown Los Angeles at the R&R Gallery and Silo Vodka Bar.

WE'RE STILL FRIENDS is Christopher Mena, Tony Vitali & Jonathan Howard. Their members include an ABC-Disney Writing Fellow, an award-winning graphic designer, and a non-graduate of UCB Improv. You might think it's weird to mention that, but hey, Steve Jobs didn't graduate either, so don't judge. Their previous video "Tall Friend" (directed by Isaac Rentz) was featured on the front page of Funny or Die and deemed “funny.”

Jonathan Howard is a television writer from Meridian, Mississippi. He is a graduate of Morehouse College and the University of Southern California. He has written for Disney's "Phineas and Ferb" and "Kick Buttowski." He is currently doing freelance work in print and digital media, and also acting in local Los Angeles theater.

Tony Vitali is an art director/graphic designer at Rockstar Energy Drinks. Originally from Riverside, New Jersey, Tony was a founding member of the Dope Sandwich hip hop crew (awarded best hip hop group of Savannah from 2006-2010) while attending the Savannah College of Art & Design.

Christopher Mena is an editor at the Discovery Channel's hit show "Sons of Guns" and helped organize the 1642 Comedy Social Club, which showcases established and up-and-coming comedians in the Los Angeles area. A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, Chris is a native of Auburn, Alabama.

"HOT DOG LADY" was directed by downtown Los Angeles reisdent Christopher Abbey. This is his directorial debut. With 8 years in design and motion graphics, "Crabbey" has worked on projects with ABC ("Lost"), Sony Playstation, and Nickelodeon.

The video was produced by Will T.S. Coleman of Thorvald Moving Pictures. He recently produced a 2012 Slamdance featured film, "Holiday Road."

Business Around A Lifestyle

I recently co-authored a book put out by Jim Kukral. Jim's a veteran online marketer and he doesn't put ketchup on a hot dog, which makes him OK in my book!

Speaking of books, Jim recently asked my to write a chapter for his new book, Business Around A Lifestyle (First Step: How To Dream Your Perfect Lifestyle, Then Go Get It!). It's the first in a series of three books. The book is out and it's loaded with common sense advise on how craft a business that suits your goals and your lifestyle. It isn't a "get rich quick" formula, it's a guide to setting goals in order to find out what makes you happy. Parts two and three in the series of three books will have action steps and how to advice.

I have read it, and I enjoyed it immensely (I'm not just saying that because I wrote a chapter either).

Advertise on The Shark Tank Blog

A friend and I started a new blog last month called the Shark Tank Blog. We make predictions about what will happen on the Shark Tank TV Show on ABC and we react to the show when it is done for the week. We also interview many of the Shark Tank entrepreneurs and sometimes the sharks themselves.

The site has been very popular, so much so that we had to upgrade our servers to handle the traffic! We will have well over 100,000 page views in the month of March, all from organic traffic. Our visitors tend to stay on the site for an average of over four minutes. We rank above the fold for many shark tank related key words- specifically those relating to individual entrepreneurs.

People who visit our site fit the demographics of the show: 18-48 year old adults. These tend to be people interested in entrepreneurship, so advertisers targeting that demographic can get great, organic, targeted exposure on the site.

We have just instituted a banner/display ad program on the site. To advertise on The Shark Tank Blog, click HERE.

Pool Shark!

While in Venice last year on vacation, I was fooling around in the pool with my Flip UltraHD Video Camera  and my six year old. We had a toy Great White Shark, a Flip Video Underwater Case, and an idea.

The video that you see here is the result. It's too bad Cisco is discontinuing the Flip UltraHD Video Camera, they are real easy to edit video with and easy to use too.

I thought about putting this video on my new Shark Tank Blog, but posted it here instead.

Enjoy!

Auggie Dogs

After such a mild winter, it is good to hear about local hot doggers opening their stands for the Spring.

One of the first is Auggie Dogs in Methuen, Massachusetts. This is a brand new business venture started by Mr. Paul Sandgren who I "met" online in one of the hot dog forums.

You will find Auggie Dogs at Ted's Stateline Mobil, 551 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844 and they'll be open 11AM-3PM EVERY DAY.

Paul's original plan to open up March 1st (that's today) will be set back a few days as we are experiencing snow for the next couple of days. It appears Murphy's Law is well in effect with regards to Mr. Sandgren. His website and Facebook Page will have updates on a daily (or as needed) basis with announcements about weather related closings and the like. Even though he plans on pushing his opening day back to Sunday, March 4, I wish him well in his new venture.

If you're looking for a good hot dog in Methuen, Massachusetts, make sure you check out Auggie Dogs.
